Interior House Painting Tips
Don’t let your paint dry out
A half-empty can of paint will dry out. Drop golf balls into the paint can to fill the air space, or place plastic wrap under the lid, seal it tightly and store the paint container upside down.
Stir paint with a modified stirrer
Before you stir the paint, drill holes in the stirrer to help mix the paint more thoroughly. The holes help the paint flow through the stirrer, aerating it like a whisk and mixing the paint evenly.
Problem tape
If you’re using older tape, sometimes it can be difficult to peel off its roll without tearing or sticking. If your painter’s tape continues to peel, microwave the whole roll for 10 seconds.
Don’t wash your brushes or rollers
If you’re using latex paint, there’s no reason to clean your brushes or rollers if you don’t finish your project in one day. Because cold temperatures keep latex paint from drying quickly, you can simply wrap your rollers or brushes in plastic bags and put them in the refrigerator.
Cover Furniture
If you can't move furniture out of a room, move all of it to the center of the room and cover and wrap it with plastic sheets that are taped at the bottom.
This will not only protect your furniture from paint drips and splatters but also all of the dust from sanding.
Start with the ceilings
It is always a good idea to start with a ceiling and from there, move down to the walls and trims.
Use Tinted Primer
Before the pros paint walls, they fill holes and patch cracks with joint compound. But if you paint directly over it, the compound will suck the moisture out of the paint, giving it a flat, dull look.
Those spots will look noticeably different than the rest of the wall. To avoid that, pros prime the walls before painting.
Sand Away Flaws
Sand the walls from the baseboard to the ceiling with a fine-grit sanding paper on a sanding pole. Then sand horizontally along the baseboard and ceiling.
Don't put a lot of pressure on the sanding pole or the head can flip over and damage the wall.

In addition, a number of factors come into play that you don’t have to deal with on the inside of a house: landscaping, hardscaping, roofing and more.
Plan Around the Elements That Are Hardest to Change
Unless you’re doing a complete renovation, surfaces such as roof shingles or tiles, stonework, pathways and driveways will remain in place.
Take these into consideration as you select exterior colours.
Look for undertones between them that might inform your palette. Are they warm (beige, khaki, brown and rust) or cool (grey, blue and black)?
Consider paint colours that will tie these fixed elements together in a harmonious way.
Consider Your Home’s Architectural Style and Era.

Consider your home’s relationship to the street and the landscape.

Choose Several Paint Shades.
Basically, an exterior scheme has three major parts: field colour, which dominates; accent colour, which brings doors, shutters and other smaller areas to life; and trim colour, used for window and door casings, roof edging, railings and other trim.
Preferably, the trim colour should contrast strongly with the field colour.
If your main hue is dark, consider classic white trim or another pale shade. A light field colour can look stunning with darker trim, it produces a crisp, dramatic effect.
Feel free to go bold with accent colours, but don’t go overboard. A door painted bright red or yellow adds just the right accent.
Extending that same shade to the shutters and roofs may be too much.
Never Rely on Paint Sample Alone.
Just like interior colours, exterior shades can vary significantly from the way they appear on the sample.
And because painting an exterior is a bigger undertaking than simply painting a room, you’ll want to get them right the first time.
Buy a quart of paint and test it on an unnoticeable area of your home. Study it at various times of day and under different weather conditions. How does it change with the light? Trial run it is the only way to determine for sure if you’ll be happy with it for years to come.
